"A Copper(II)-Catalyzed Tandem Michael-Aldol Reaction for the Preparation of 1,2-Dihydroquinolines," by Anna M. Wagner (CMC '09), Claire E. Knezevic (Scripps '08), Jessica L. Wall (CMC '12), Victoria L. Sun (Scripps '11), Joshua A. Buss (CMC '12), LeeAnn T. Allen (Scripps '12), and Anna G. Wenzel was recently published as a communication in the journal Tetrahedron Letters. In this research, the metal salt copper(II) triflate was used to facilitate the formation of 1,2-dihydroquinolines, which are compounds known have proven biological activity against a wide range of pharmaceutical targets. During reaction optimization, the importance of adding acetonitrile as a solvent for the purpose of binding copper, as well as an agent to minimize water-promoted decomposition, was determined to be crucial for effective product formation.
