Professor of Chemistry Thomas Poon's research on anti-influenza medication is featured in today's Washington Post. Professor Poon, a chemist, and his students found shikimic acid, an important component in the flu medication Tamiflu, in seeds from the sweetgum tree. Since the time of their discovery in 2008, synthetic methods have been developed to produce this acid, but Poon's research shows that multiple sources of this acid are present in nature. Please see http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/special/metro/urban-jungle/?media=recent Professor Poon also serves as Senior Associate Dean of Faculty and Accrediation Liaison Officer for one of the three W.M.Keck Science Department's sponsor colleges, Pitzer College. The other two sponsoring institutions are Claremont McKenna College and Scripps College.
