Assistant Professor of Biology Melissa Coleman, Shayna Williams (CMC '09), and Alexis Nast (CMC '10), have published an article, "Characterization of Synaptically Connected Nuclei in a Potential Sensorimotor Feedback Pathway in the Zebra Finch Song System," in the journal PLoS ONE. Like humans, songbirds must learn their vocalizations, specifically song. Most of the brain areas involved in song learning and production have been identified, although how they interact and contribute to song learning and production is not well-understood. This paper describes physiological interactions between two identified areas of the songbird brain that are necessary for song learning and song production. In addition, it identifies a new area of the songbird brain that may be important for auditory-vocal integration necessary for song learning.
