Assistant Professor of Biology Patrick Ferree, Megan Swim (Scripps '12), Kelsey Kaeding (CMC '15) have published an article in the Journal of Cell Science. They studied "PSR," the Paternal Sex Ratio chromosome, in the jewel wasp, Nasonia Vitripennis. Unlike normal hereditary material that works cooperatively to insure survival of an organism, PSR works to destroy its host. Prof. Ferree, Megan, and Kelsey performed lab experiments to determine that the PSR chromosome disrupts normal packaging of the paternal genome by interfering with the molecular packaging machinery. |
