Asst Prof of Chemistry Colin Robins
Assistant professor of chemistry Colin Robins is first author on a paper in the September-October 2012 issue of Soil Science Society of America Journal. The article, "Conceptual mineral genesis models for calcic pendants and petrocalcic horizons," written with collaborators A.L. Brock-Hon and B. J. Buck, presents an updated review of relationships between arid soil mineralogy, soil solution chemistry, and paleoclimate. The article also describes how increased salt concentrations under dusty, interglacial climates might explain the presence of barite (BaSO4), a mineral not generally thought to crystallize in desert soil. His team studied the local formation and solubility of barite in a 4-5 million year-old soil profile of the Mojave Desert.
