Assistant Professor of Chemistry Aaron Leconte is coauthor on an article published in Nature Chemical Biology. The article, "Discovery and biological characterization of geranylated RNA in bacteria', was written in conjunction with Christoph Dumelin, Yiyun Chen, and Grace Chen in David R. Liu's laboratory in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University. The work combines mass spectrometry, chemical synthesis, and enzymology to discover and characterize a new form of chemically modified RNA. The development and application of mass spectrometry-based methods, like those described in the article, enable the discovery of chemically-modified RNA which would not have been detectable using previous, less sensitive methods. It is expected that such discoveries will also contribute to the discovery of new RNA biology, which might have important implications for human health and disease.
