Associate Professor of Biology Emily Wiley and collaborators have created a novel database to share new discoveries made by undergraduates about the function of genes. With a team that includes coauthor Prof. Nicholas Stover, Associate Professor of Biology at Bradley University and curator of the Tetrahymena Genome Database (suprdb.org), Dr. Wiley has created a resource to share current results with the wider scientific community, as well as students at other institutions. The current study shows that the opportunity to web-publish their data and analyses in this highly visible way increased students' motivation and engagement with authentic research performed as part of a course, and motivated production of higher quality scientific writing. These findings should inform strategies used by instructors to improve the impact of their course-based research curriculum in a variety of disciplines.
