In the wake of climate change we are currently experiencing a major biodiversity loss with societal impacts of unknown dimensions. The investigation of biodiversity regulators in deep time improves the understanding of how biodiversity responded to previous changes in the environment, which in turn will enable predictions of future developments. We argue for better comprehension of how organisms interact with their environment and increased efforts towards deciphering evolutionary processes acting at vastly different scales. Given the complexity of biodiversity and the variety of involved disciplines, we call for a paradigm shift in educating the next generation of biodiversity researchers.
