Undergraduate Coursework

The required coursework varies from school to school. Commonly required courses are as follows:

  • Anatomy and Physiology with lab (one year)
  • Chemistry (inorganic/organic/or biochemistry) with lab
  • Introduction to Statistics
  • Introduction to Sociology
  • Introduction to Psychology
  • Life Span Development
  • Microbiology with lab
  • Nutrition
  • English (sometimes a composition/writing intensive course is required)

Standardized Tests

For entrance into a nursing graduate program, you will need to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The GRE is a computer-based test similar to the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). You can prepare for it using independent study materials or by taking a prep course. Whatever you choose, you should take advantage of the free practice software available on the GRE website (
