Pharmaceutical Industry
The pharmaceutical industry is facing perhaps the most difficult environment in its history. Despite massive investments in R&D, the industry has not developed the new products it needs to replace the numerous blockbuster drugs losing patent protection. The industry has responded to these deteriorating fundamentals through large-scale mergers and by slashing jobs for tens of thousands of highly skilled scientists and managers—essentially jettisoning internal R&D. But, even with these draconian steps, earnings growth in the industry has slowed to a near halt. At the same time, scientific progress seems to be accelerating. What’s going on? This seminar explores the scientific and cultural reasons behind this crisis and proposes specific scientific, business, and regulatory solutions.
